Introduction to the Kyrgyzstan expedition

Kyrgyzstan flag

Central Asia is a region famous for its history - the caravans of the ancient Silk Route, fearsome warriors on horseback like Genghiz Khan, and communist rule under the Russians.  Kyrgyzstan is a fascinating Central Asian country, 94% of which is made up of the mountains of the Tien Shan. It is classic Central Asian steppe country, characterised mainly by miles of empty rolling grassland, vast alpine lakes, and the Tien Shan and Kyrgyz mountain ranges.

The main cities of Kyrgyzstan have a definite Russian influence. It is otherwise sparsely populated and remains traditionally rural, with many still living in yurts which are round, tent-like constructions.

World Challenge in Kyrgyzstan Our Challengers loved…
The sheer remoteness of the country; superb trekking in areas that had hardly been visited before and where English had never been heard let alone spoken!

The teams relished the physical challenge whilst at the same time absorbing the stunning scenery surrounding them as they made their way past glaciers and breathtaking snowy peaks, some of which have never been climbed.
